WHY DID I WANT TO DO 365 DAYS OF YOGA IN 365 DAYS??
Incase you were wondering why I did this challenge… I wanted to loosen up my musculoskeletal system and I knew it would take a lot of stretching. The heat would be a bonus to aid with the stretching. Soon after I started Bikram yoga for the first time, Michelle offered a 30-day challenge. I was excited to give it a try since I enjoyed coming everyday. By doing the 30-day challenge I realized it was safe and possible to do this type of yoga daily and longterm.
HOW WAS I ABLE TO MAINTAIN MOTIVATION DAY TO DAY TO FINISH?
It was easy to come to class daily because all of the teachers are friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable. The classes are predictable with the exact same postures and order. Therefore, I enjoyed gauging how I progressed daily.
Just as soon as I completed the 30-day challenge I was told enthusiastically by a teacher that I am already half way through with the 60-day challenge and should go for it. I agreed, and it was shortly into the 60-day challenge that I decided I would just come for a solid year because I really wanted to make some serious headway with my flexibility, strength, and balance. I thought to myself, if I’m ever going to do it I better do it now.
Initially coming everyday flared up some chronic problems I had and I went to urgent care once with a neck spasm, and an Orthopedic Doctor twice for my knees and ankles. When I would explain to them what I was doing in yoga I would get a smile and they would say “Just don’t do it if it hurts. You can take muscle relaxers if you want. You are getting old. Most people don’t try to bend like that. “ I really believed that by coming everyday these problems would gradually heal.
DETERMINATION SELF-CONTROL CONCENTRATION PATIENCE FAITH
These virtuous characteristics listed in the yoga room also motivated me to continue to finish the challenge. They reminded me of a verse in the Bible, book of Proverbs that talks about mightier is a person who can rule their own spirit than one who rules a whole city.
I’m so happy to say that my neck never bothers me and I can squat down in toe stand without any knee pain. My ankles are fine and I ran a marathon last November!! It took about 6 months of going to class every day to get to this point. Since I made it public that I would do 365 days, I held myself accountable to complete the challenge and continue to receive the benefits. I’m determined to at least maintain the progress I made. Yes it was stressful at times to find the time and I did many doubles to make up missed classes but the doubles actually made me stronger! I also learned that you can do this yoga no matter how tired you are feeling or stressed out. It only helps.
